The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has reduced the cash rate from 4.35% to 4.10%, bringing some welcome relief to homeowners and borrowers. This is the first rate cut in five years and is aimed at easing financial pressure as inflation slows. Many experts believe this could be the first of multiple cuts in 2025.

Why Did the RBA Cut Rates?

The RBA had kept rates at a 13-year high since November 2023, trying to control inflation. However, recent data showed inflation is coming down, staying within the RBA’s 2 to 3 per cent target range. This allowed the central bank to reduce rates without risking another surge in prices.
Announcing the cut, the RBA under Governor Michele Bullock said:

“Inflation has fallen substantially since the peak in 2022, as higher interest rates have been working to bring aggregate demand and supply closer towards balance.

However, upside risks remain. Some recent labour market data have been unexpectedly strong, suggesting that the labour market may be somewhat tighter than previously thought.”

Some analysts expected the RBA to hold off, concerned about rising government spending and a still-tight job market. But for most borrowers, this decision is good news, as lower rates mean cheaper home loan repayments.

How Does This Affect You?

For homeowners with variable-rate mortgages, the rate cut should provide immediate relief. If you have a $600,000 home loan, your monthly repayments could drop by around $92. This adds up to $1,104 per year and $3,312 over three years, making a real difference to household budgets.

At their next meeting on April 18, 2025, the RBA will assess how this rate cut affects the economy. If inflation continues to ease, we may see further reductions later this year, making home loans even more affordable.

How Are the Major Banks Responding?

The major banks have started responding to the RBA’s rate cut.

  • Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has announced it will reduce interest rates by 0.25%, effective from 28/2/25.
  • Westpac will also cut rates, but its reduction will be effective from 4/3/25.
  • Other major banks are expected to follow suit, though they may not pass on the rate cuts at the same time. Borrowers should monitor their lender’s announcements to see when reductions will take effect.
